More about this video
A Linne’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) named Paula has resided at Halle Zoo in Germany since 25 September 1971 – a period of 48 years 16 days as of 11 October 2019. Although born in the wild, Paula was fully grown and estimated to have been at least two years old when she arrived, thus the zoo celebrated her 50th birthday on 14 June 2019 (her nominated birthday). In the wild, the typical lifespan for two-toed sloths is around 20 years old; in captivity, that increases to 30–40 years. Paula’s superlative longevity is nevertheless far beyond the average for her species.
