More than 90 percent of the Earth s ozone exists in the lower reaches of the stratosphere, between 13 and 20 kilometres up. Known as the Ozone layer it acts as a filter that absorbs between 93 and 99 percent of the high energy ultraviolet-B component of the Sun s rays.
