Phenolphthalein is a known "indicator" in chemistry titrations and is a white powder. place a little bit of calcium hydroxide on your hand and add a pinch of phenolphthalein. then rub both your palms vigorously. surprisingly , the white powders when mixed and rubbed turn a fierce red -- almost crimson. this is obviously because of a chemical reaction.
