In this math video we will be approximating irrational square roots on a number line. We will be given a number line with four plotted points and asked to identify which is the best approximation of the given square root. We will create a number line using perfect square roots and understand that all perfect squares are rational numbers. We will determine between which two perfect squares the given non-perfect square lies between. We will eliminate answer choices outside of this parameter. We will then determine how far the non-perfect square is from each of the perfect squares to determine the correct plotted point. We will understand that all non-perfect squares are irrational numbers since they result a non-terminating and non-repeating decimal. An exemplar solution is modeled and explained.
