In this math video we will learn 6 steps to divide rational numbers in fraction form. We will discover how dividing rational numbers in fraction form are similar to dividing integers. I will introduce you to a procedural check list and graphic organizer to build your confidence and success dividing positive and negative fractions. We will begin by writing the problem and completing the following 6 steps -
Step 1: Determine the SIGN of the quotient. Write +/- in Step 6 Box.
Same Signs - The quotient of two values with the SAME sign will ALWAYS be POSITIVE
Different Signs - The quotient of two values with DIFFERENT signs will ALWAYS be NEGATIVE.
Step 2: If necessary, write mixed numbers as improper fractions.
Step 3: Rewrite division as multiplication.
1. Keep the first number the same.
2. Change the division sign to multiplication.
3. Change the second number to its reciprocal.
Step 4: Multiply the numerators.
Step 5: Multiply the denominators.
Step 6: If necessary, simplify the fraction.
